How to Check Your Front-Load Washer Gasket for Mold

If your washing machine smells musty, start with the rubber seal around the door. Here's how to check it, what the black spots mean and what to do next.

If your front-loader smells musty even after a wash, look at the rubber seal around the door before you buy another washer cleaner. It tells you what you're dealing with.

This guide comes from Way Beyond Cleaning, an owner-run cleaning company based in Fairfield, CT. The check is Rich's own, from the Washer/Dryer Renewal Service he offers across Fairfield County and Westchester County, NY, plus New Haven and Litchfield Counties. Use it on your own front-load washer, whoever you call afterwards, and keep your washer's manual to hand for the products it allows.

Why does my washing machine smell?

With a front-loader, the door gasket is the usual suspect. LG's support guidance says keeping the washer door closed traps moisture, and mold may form inside the door gasket. Rich sees the same pattern: in his experience every front-load washer develops mold, mildew and odors over time.

So when the smell won't go, check the gasket before anything else.

How do you check a front-load washer gasket for mold?

These are Rich's four steps.

  1. Open the main door

Open the washer door all the way so you can see the whole seal around the opening.

  2. Find the gray rubber gasket

It's the big rubber ring, usually gray, that the door closes against.

  3. Pull back the bottom of the gasket

Pull back the loose part at the bottom of the gasket to reveal its inside. The fold hides what's on the inner face.

  4. Look for black spots and stains

If the inside is covered in black spots and stains, that's mold. In Rich's video, the gasket he holds up has the brown staining he describes as what mold looks like when you try to clean it.

Found it? The next question is whether to clean the gasket or replace it.

Can you clean mold off a washer gasket, or does it need replacing?

Regular cleaning is the first line. LG recommends cleaning the gasket at least once a month with a diluted oxygen bleach solution, but your own washer's manual comes first on which products it allows.

Mold that has set into the rubber is a different matter. Rich says it's extremely difficult to remove and that most of the time the gasket has to be replaced. In his words, holding a stained gasket: "this is what mold looks like when you're trying to clean it. And it just won't go away."

That's why Way Beyond Cleaning's Washer/Dryer Renewal Service replaces the gasket instead of scrubbing it. The washer's panels come off, a new factory gasket goes in, and a disinfection process cleans many of the hidden areas where mold and mildew develop. Pricing starts at $379.

How do you stop mold coming back in a front-load washer?

Moisture is what you're up against. LG's guidance for its front-loaders splits into what to do after each wash and a monthly gasket clean.

  • After each wash: empty the tub

Take the laundry out when the cycle ends.

  • After each wash: open the door and the dispenser

Open the washer door and the detergent dispenser so the moisture can evaporate, especially in hot, humid weather.

  • Monthly: clean the gasket

At least once a month, clear anything caught in the groove at the bottom of the seal and clean the gasket with a diluted oxygen bleach solution, if your washer's manual allows it.

  • Monthly: dry it off

After that clean, dry the gasket and the door glass with a dry towel and leave the door open until everything is completely dry.

Way Beyond Cleaning's service comes with an after-care kit at no extra cost: products to keep the washer clean and dry, and an after-care routine designed to reduce mold and mildew coming back.

Should you check the dryer while you're at it?

If the washer is getting attention, give the dryer some too. Lint collects inside the machine as well as on the screen, and Rich's point is that it restricts airflow and stretches drying times. Rich builds the dryer into the service to clear those hidden lint bottlenecks, which is meant to cut drying times and reduce fire hazards.

The Washer/Dryer Renewal covers the dryer as well: its panels come off, the filter port gets vacuumed and the front and back are cleaned of as much lint as possible. It doesn't include the vent system or the ductwork behind the wall.

Washer gasket mold: questions people ask

Is the black stuff on my washer gasket mold?

Check the gasket. In Rich's experience, mold that has set into the rubber is extremely difficult to remove, and most of the time a badly stained gasket has to be replaced.

How often should I clean my washer gasket?

LG recommends at least once a month for its front-load washers, with a diluted oxygen bleach solution. Check your own washer's manual for the products it allows.
